When it comes time to do the job, your contractor will mark prep the site and then excavate 4 to 10 inches. Often they will lay a weed barrier and anchor the edging to border the path. A foundation of base rock is laid to stabilize the foundation of the walkway. The base layer is compacted, and a thin layer of sand is placed, and the concrete pavers are laid out and leveled. Finally, the gravel is spread to fill the gaps between pavers and along edges, then raked smooth.
MATERIALS OPTIONS – CONCRETE PAVERS AND GRAVEL
Concrete pavers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and costs. Precast pavers are available in square, rectangle, and circular shapes and are a very cost-effective option. Your typical concrete paver is generally small, the most common being 1 X 1-foot squares, but there are many larger sizes and shapes available. Keep in mind that larger sizes are often more costly. They do come in many colors with light and dark gray and terra cotta being the most popular choices.
Once you’ve chosen your pavers, you have several options for filling around the pavers. As a general rule, select gravel or stones that complement the pavers you’ve chosen. For a more subtle look, choose gravel that picks up the color of your concrete pavers. Pale pavers with dark gravel (or dark pavers with lighter gravel) can create a dramatic, contemporary look.
• Gravel: The cost will vary by the type of rock and the size of the stones, as well as what’s available in the region. Decomposed granite or granite fines come in the smallest sizes, while coarse gravel can be over an inch wide. Let your design dictate the gravel you use.
• Pea Gravel: This is widely available and has a nice feel underfoot. One drawback is that the stones tend to end up on the pavers due to their round shape and smaller size.
• Beach Pebbles and Polished River Rocks: These are larger rocks that have a chunky, tactile quality between pavers and their larger size tends to keep them in place.
Edging material is necessary to keep your walkway together. You have several choices of edging options available that can work to create the perfect shape for your pathway including:
• Synthetic Edging: Typically made of recycled plastic, synthetic edging is inexpensive, durable and widely available. It’s a very pliable material and is perfect to create tight smooth curving pathways.
• Concrete Pavers: They are often less expensive than brick or stone, precast concrete pavers can offer an attractive edging that can tie your design together.
• Brick: Traditional brick edging works perfectly for traditional and cottage style garden pathways.
• Stone Edging: Hardscape stone is typically sold by the pallet. Granite cobblestones are a durable edging material for San Francisco Bay Area gardens.
• Metal: It’s sleek and contemporary, durable and nearly disappears from view.
